On my Birthday 2011

Dear 아빠,

Happy Birthday! I can only imagine how tough this past year has been for you – 엄마 and the restaurant, the endless hours you spend at the market, and 할아버지’s passing. I’m sure there are a lot of things that you’d rather forget or move on with, but I can’t help but be thankful for the ways in which God has taught and grown our family so much during this difficult season. Never before have I ever seen more desperation and longing in you and in our family to depend and trust in God for all that He is. And for that, I’m so thankful. 아빠, I can’t believe that time is moving so quickly; 형 and I have grown up a lot, but I hope you know that there’s always a place in our hearts where we appreciate all that you’ve done. Even when I’m married and have kids, please know that I will still want and need you as my dad. There are not many people in this world who love me, listen to me, and give me the advice that I need like you can. So, Happy Birthday! I really wish I could be in California to celebrate with you. I hope you enjoy the cake and the wallet.

justinhmin: Happy Birthday, 형. It’s surreal to think that I’m now a college graduate, and you’re well on your way to getting married. Has it already been over 10 years since we walked home together from Carver Elementary or ate our share of chicken soft tacos in front of George Nye Library?   We’ve grown up. Our circumstances have changed. And I no longer have the luxury of being a mere foot away from your door. But I’m okay with that because I know you’ll always have my back. Aside from God Himself, you’re the only one who’s seen the ugliest, darkest, and most sinful parts of my heart and loved me nonetheless. Thank you.  Here’s to celebrating our God who loved me enough to send me an older brother like you.  -J
